❓ Why Does My Cat Need Flu Vaccines?
Cat Flu is not the same as human flu. It's an umbrella term for a highly contagious upper respiratory infection caused by two main viruses: Feline Herpesvirus (FHV) and Feline Calicivirus (FCV).
- It's Highly Contagious: It spreads quickly through sneezes, shared bowls, or even on your clothing.
- It Can Be Severe: While some cats only get mild sniffles, it can be life-threatening, especially for kittens, elderly cats, and those with other health issues.
- Vaccines Reduce Severity: A vaccinated cat is much more likely to only experience mild symptoms—or none at all—even if exposed to the virus. Without vaccination, the disease is much more serious.
🐱 Which Cats Should Be Vaccinated?
The short answer: ALL of them!
Cat Flu and Feline Panleukopenia vaccines are considered Core Vaccines and are recommended for every cat, regardless of lifestyle.

Why? |
|
Kittens |
Essential |
Their immune systems are fragile and they are at the highest risk of severe or fatal disease. |
|
Outdoor Cats |
Essential |
They are constantly exposed to other cats and environments where diseases can linger. |
|
Indoor-Only Cats |
Essential |
You can track viruses like Panleukopenia into your home on your shoes or clothes, making your cat vulnerable. |
|
Boarding/Cattery Cats |
Essential |
Being in a multi-cat environment significantly increases exposure risk. |
🛡️ How Do Cat Vaccines Work? (Simple Explanation)
A vaccine contains a tiny, harmless amount of the virus (either weakened or inactive) that we want to protect against.
- The Training: When injected, the vaccine trains your cat's immune system to recognize the unique signature of the dangerous virus.
- The Soldiers: The immune system then creates "soldiers" called antibodies and specialized cells that are programmed to destroy that specific invader.
- The Protection: If your cat is exposed to the real disease later, the immune system's soldiers are already armed and ready to fight it off quickly, preventing or greatly reducing the severity of the illness.
⏰ What Happens If I Miss a Dose or Booster?
Vaccinations are given as a primary course (usually two injections a few weeks apart for kittens/unvaccinated adults) followed by regular boosters (usually annually or every three years, depending on the vaccine type and your cat's lifestyle).
- Missing a Kitten Dose (Primary Course): If you miss a dose in the initial series, your kitten will not be fully protected. The vet may need to restart the course to ensure a strong immune response, leaving your kitten vulnerable for longer.
- Missing a Booster (Adult Cat): Immunity naturally fades over time. If you miss a booster, your cat's protection will weaken, putting them at risk of becoming severely ill if they encounter the disease. Depending on how long it has been, your vet may recommend a single booster or advise restarting the primary course.
Always call us immediately if you miss an appointment! We will advise you on the best and safest path forward to restore your cat's full protection.
